If you’re building or renovating anywhere in Miami-Dade or Broward County, sooner or later you’ll run into four letters that decide what may — and may not — go in your entry opening: HVHZ. Here’s what the term means, what the code actually requires of a front door, and how to verify that the door you’re buying qualifies. It’s less complicated than it sounds, and knowing it protects both your home and your permit.

What “HVHZ” Actually Means

HVHZ stands for High-Velocity Hurricane Zone — the designation the Florida Building Code applies to Miami-Dade and Broward counties. It was born from the lessons of Hurricane Andrew in 1992, and it remains the most stringent wind-borne-debris building standard in the United States. Structures in the HVHZ are designed for ultimate wind speeds of roughly 170 mph in Broward and 175 mph in Miami-Dade for a typical home. Every exterior opening — every window and every door — must be proven, by physical testing, to survive those conditions.

What the Code Requires of an Entry Door

Three things, in essence. First, the door must be tested and approved as a complete assembly — panel, frame, hardware, and glazing together, not as separate parts. Second, that assembly must carry a current product approval: a Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance (NOA) or a Florida Product Approval valid for HVHZ use. Third, it must be installed exactly as tested — same anchoring, same hardware, same components. An excellent door installed differently from its approval documents is, in the eyes of the inspector, not an approved door at all. This is the baseline for every impact-resistant door we build.

The Tests: TAS 201, 202, and 203 in Plain English

HVHZ product testing follows the Miami-Dade Testing Application Standards, and the three that matter for doors are easy to picture. TAS 201 is the large-missile impact test: a nine-pound 2×4 is fired at the door assembly at roughly 34 miles per hour, simulating wind-borne debris striking the door mid-storm. TAS 202 is the structural test: the assembly is loaded to its design pressures and checked for structural performance plus air and water infiltration. TAS 203 is the cyclic test: after the impact, the assembly endures thousands of positive and negative pressure cycles, simulating the relentless push-pull of hurricane gusts over hours. A door has to pass all three — impact, strength, and endurance — to earn HVHZ approval.

How to Read a Rating: What +65/−65 PSF Means

Product approvals state a design pressure in pounds per square foot — for example, +65/−65 PSF. The positive number is wind pushing the door into the house; the negative number is suction pulling it outward as the storm passes. Sixty-five pounds on every square foot of a large entry door adds up to a force measured in tons, sustained and reversing, for hours. The rating on the approval must meet or exceed the design pressure your engineer calculates for your specific opening.

Yes, a Wood Entry Door Can Be HVHZ-Rated

The most common misconception we hear is that HVHZ compliance means settling for a commodity metal or fiberglass door. It doesn’t. Our doors are certified for the HVHZ in both of our lines. The modern pivot line is approved under Florida Product Approval FL#28370: rated +65/−65 PSF, tested to TAS 201, 202, and 203, approved at sizes up to 81 inches wide by 147¾ inches tall, with outswing performance per AAMA 1304. The classical outswing line is approved under FL#16326: also rated +65/−65 PSF, with forced-entry resistance tested per ASTM F588. In other words, a twelve-foot custom pivot door and a formal classical entry can both be fully code-legal in Miami-Dade and Broward — the engineering is already done and on file. Installed as Tested — or Not Approved at All

One rule surprises many buyers: approval belongs to the assembly, not the panel. Substituting hinges, changing the frame anchoring, or swapping hardware components voids the approval and will fail inspection. This is why an HVHZ door should come from a manufacturer who supplies the complete, tested assembly and installation documents that match the approval line for line. It’s also why “we’ll make it work on site” is a phrase that should end a conversation with any vendor.

What to Ask For Before You Buy

  • The approval number — a Florida Product Approval FL# or Miami-Dade NOA number — for the exact door model and configuration you’re buying.
  • Verification: look the FL# up yourself on the Florida Building Commission’s site (floridabuilding.org). It takes two minutes.
  • The design pressure rating, checked against your opening’s engineering — not just “it’s impact-rated.”
  • Size limits: confirm your door’s dimensions fall within the approved maximums.
  • Installation documents that match the approval, so your inspector sees exactly what was tested.

An HVHZ door is not a marketing label — it’s a legal category backed by some of the toughest physical testing in construction.
